History

and Facts

Here are some facts about the 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle:

Engine options

The 1972 Chevelle was available with a variety of engines, including a 350-cubic-inch V8, 402-cubic-inch (still known as a 396), and 454.

The SS model's top engine was rated at 270 net horsepower (201 kW).

The 1972 model year was also the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 cid engine.

Packages

The SS trim could be purchased with the ZL2 package, which included a cowl induction hood, wide racing stripes, and hood pins.

The Heavy Chevy package, which debuted in 1971, was also available on any V-8 model except the SS 454 and featured upgraded suspension components and unique graphics.

Design

The Chevelle had a broad, well-sculpted grille, dual round headlights, a "Coke bottle" side profile, and a well-defined beltline that dipped towards the rear.

The rear featured triple tail light clusters on either side, and the wheel arches housed standard 17-inch wheels with drum or optional disc brakes.

SS models also had chrome bumpers and sporty hood vents.

Interior

The interior may have featured original parchment cream upholstery, wood-grain inserts on the console, the original steering wheel, and factory gauges.

In 1972, the Chevelle was America's second-best-selling car, with an estimated 701,000 produced.
